Mumbai, September 27: Western Railway (WR) authorities have said they will fit CCTV cameras either in August Kranti Rajdhani Express or Mumbai Rajdhani Express to avoid theft and to keep an eye on the belongings of passengers. These cameras will be fitted in each coach by January 2018. At least one or more CCTV cameras will be placed in each coach for monitoring and surveillance purposes.

Highlights

  • These cameras will be fitted in each coach by January 2018.
  • They are currently focused on understanding the specifications of the camera required.

This decision is taken after Rs 11 lakh belonging to a passenger was stolen in August who was travelling in August Kranti Rajdhani Express, reported Indian Express. Since then, the railway officials are keeping an eye on every trip of the Rajdhani trains.

A K Gupta, General Manager of Western Railway told Indian Express that fitting CCTV cameras in one of these Rajdhani trains will ensure better security to the commuters. They are currently focused on understanding the specifications of the camera required.

Udai Shukla, Chief Security Commissioner, Railway Protection Force, WR said, “We will install them in each coach of the train so that monitoring is improved. There is a need for more than one camera in the coach as surveillance can be enhanced”. (ALSO READ: Govt Plans to Get More Python Trains to Make Transportation of Goods More Convenient)

Shukla added that as there are no CCTV cameras and automatic door closing system inside the trains, it becomes mandatory for the RPF staff to do personal monitoring that includes questioning regular passenger and railway officials. However, once the CCTV cameras are placed, this won’t be required.

On Tuesday, the Western Railway launched an Eyewatch application. This application helps the dispatch quick response teams to the exact location of the person travelling whenever he presses the alert button on the app.
