New Delhi, Jan 22: Indian sleuths involved in the handling of 26/11 Mumbai attacks, security of high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL) matches and other critical operations are being sought for security assistance for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will compile a list of 20 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers for the first security seminar in Qatar’s capital, Doha, in March this year.

Maharashtra government and the National Security Guard (NSG) have been asked to nominate SP and DIG rank officials, who participated in the counter-terror operations during the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The terror strike, which was carried out by 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba militants, led to 166 deaths. At the time of the attack, NSG commandos were called in, who secured hostages and flushed out militants in a three-day long operation.

Similarly, Delhi, Rajasthan and Gujarat governments have been asked to name officers who were in charge of security during the IPL matches, said an Indian Express report. Officers involved with the security of FIFA under-17 World Cup in India last year, the domestic football Indian Super League (Football), and National Games set to be held in Uttarakhand this year, are on the watchlist.

“States and UTs (union territories) have been told to nominate officers after we received communication from Doha and FIFA. The event will be a good exposure for our officers, and our forces can benefit from their experience in the near future,” a senior government official was quoted as saying. “It is desirable to sponsor such officers who have expertise in more than one field and the nominated officer should be in excellent health and fit to travel,” the Home Ministry reportedly told States and UTs in a recent communication.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has been asked for officers who have worked in the area of “international engagement and cooperation”. The officers should have a “very good knowledge of English” and have no charges of taint or corruption, the MHA said. , FIFA World Cup 2022, the 28-day tournament will kick off on Monday, November 21 while the final is scheduled for Sunday, December 18 — Qatar’s national day.
