Washington, Nov 16: A 21-year-old Indian student was allegedly shot dead by robbers at a grocery store in California on Tuesday. Reports say one of the armed robbers was also of Indian origin. The incident happened when the Indian student, Dharampreet Singh Jasser, was on duty at the grocery store in Fresno city in California on Tuesday night.
Reports say the four robbers barged into the grocery store and looted it. Jasser hid the cash behind the counter and was reportedly shot at by one of the robbers before they left the store.
Jasser belonged to Nawanshahr in Punjab. He was an accounting student and had gone to the US three years ago on a student visa. On getting the news, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted, “Shocked at the gruesome killing of Nawanshahr’s Dharampreet Singh in California.” He also requested External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to “take up the issue at highest levels with US authorities to ensure justice for the family”.

The police have arrested 22-year-old Athwal, an Indian-origin man, who is believed to be one of the four suspects who looted the store and fired multiple shots. According to reports, police said that a Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy saw media coverage of the incident and recognised Athwal. He has been charged with murder and robbery.
A search operation is on to nab the other three robbers. “Dharampreet was a completely innocent victim, just doing his job, when he was senselessly killed during this robbery,” Madera Sheriff Jay Varney said.
