Nagpur, March 6: Showing grit and fortitude, a 33-year-old C-60 commando police naik Gomji Mattami fought off four Maoists with bare hands, even after being stabbed in his chest. The incident occurred at Jambia Gatta in Etapalli taluka in Gadchiroli. The injured jawan also managed to snatch back his service rifle from the outlaws, forcing them to flee the spot. Ironically, the guerrillas left their own fire own and ten of its cartridges before fleeing.

Mattami’s bravado is being lauded by the police department. Even in the injured condition, the brave jawan was cautious while shooting at the outlaws as the place of the attack was a market place, and there were a lot of people in the vicinity. The Maoists’ plan was to attack a solitary cop and snatch away his weapons after killing him.

The officer told a media house that he was standing at the market place when he was grabbed from behind and was pinned down. One of the four Maoists pulled a trigger at him, but the gun didn’t fire. He said that he held on to his gun tightly. Only after he was stabbed in his chest, he let go of the guns. Moments after that, the officer chased them and snatched away the weapon.

The officer was admitted in a hospital and is out of danger. He is undergoing treatment for the injuries he received in the attack.
