New Delhi: President of India Ram Nath Kovind, in his address to the nation on Thursday, extended his warm greetings on the eve of International Women’s Day, which is observed every year on March 8.
In his message, the President said, “On International Women’s Day, I extend my warm greetings to all fellow citizens and particularly to the daughters of India who, through their success, have brought glory to the nation. We are proud of them.”
Adding, President Kovind said, “This day is dedicated to woman power. Keeping pace with the changing times, women have proved themselves in every sphere of life and have won laurels for their talent. I am confident that Indian society will continue progressing towards greater women’s empowerment and the continuous emphasis on gender equity will usher in new opportunities for women and for society. I extend my best wishes to all on this happy day.”
On the occasion of the Women’s Day on Friday, the President will present the Nari Shakti Puraskar for 2018, the highest civilian honour for women in India, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development confers the Nari Shakti Puraskar on women and institutions to recognise their relentless service towards the cause of women empowerment and social welfare.
“This year, around 1,000 nominations were received by the ministry and 44 were selected for the award,” an official statement said. “Scientists, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, social workers, farmers, artists, masons, a woman marine pilot, a woman commando trainer, journalists and film-makers are among the recipients of the award,” it added.
