New Delhi, June 21: Millions on Wednesday performed Yoga early in the morning as the world celebrated the 3rd International Yoga Day today. From New Delhi to New York, from Lucknow to London, people gathered for mass events to perform Yoga. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with over 51,000 people performed Yoga at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan in Lucknow even as it rained from 6:30 am to 8 am today. Massive Yoga events were also held in Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat and other states. Besides India, Yoga Day events were organised in over 180 countries.

Lucknow: PM Modi, UP CM Yogi perform yoga

With 440 CCTV cameras installed and over 51,000 participants, PM Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath performed yoga in the early hours of Wednesday. Even as many speculated that the event may be washed out, all participants including the two leaders performed yoga in the rain. The PM performed various asanas like the pawanmuktasana, kandhar asana, taad asana and others, accompanied by school children (Also Read: 5 asanas to help you perform better in exams). Addressing the participants, PM Modi vouched for yoga as something that not just benefits the mind and body, but is also a new job market now.

Delhi CM Kejriwal performs Yoga at Connaught Place, Ramdev, Amit Shah in Ahmedabad

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu and other political leaders along with over 10,000 people gathered at the Inner Circle of Connaught Place to perform Yoga. Yoga events were also organised at other spots in Delhi including Lodhi Garden and Ramlila Maidan.

In Ahmedabad, spiritual leader-turned-entrepreneur Ramdev was accompanied by Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani along with thousands of participants to perform yoga. Here too, the leaders performed Yoga even as it was drizzling at the venue.

In Bengaluru, activist Anna Hazare along with Union Minister Ananth Kumar performed Yoga. Yoga Day celebrations also took place in Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and other states.

Congress leaders, farmers protest with Shavaasana

Congress workers performed ‘shavaasana’ (a relaxing posture said to resemble a dead body), to mark their protest against the recent death of six farmers in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district in police firing during a protest. The ‘yoga protest’ was observed in front of the party office in Bhopal in the wake of the recent widespread protest in the state demanding fair price for their crops.

Farmers and their family members, too, observed a similar yoga protest in different states.

Defence forces perform Yoga

Yoga day celebrations took place on board INS Vikramaditya, INS Jalashwa, INS Kirch and other Naval ships. Naval officials also performed yoga on board submarines.

ITBP jawans also performed Yoga at nearly 18,000 feet in Ladakh in -25 degrees.

NCC cadets in Kolkata also performed Yoga on Wednesday. The Indian Coast Guard personnel perform Yoga, off West Coast and at Headquarters in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa also lead a Yoga session organised in Air Force Station in New Delhi.

Yoga Day across the world

Yoga Day was also celebrated across the world. Thousands performed Yoga outside the UN headquarters in New York at 4 am. Many also performed Yoga at Machu Pichu in Peru. Yoga day celebrations also took place at London’s Trafalgar Square while Great Wall of China also witnessed a massive celebration.

Many across the country and the world also performed over 100 Suryanamaskars to observe the Yoga Day.

The first International Yoga Day was observed on June 21, 2015. The main event took place in Delhi. Since then, Yoga Day celebrations have continued to get bigger each year.
