New Delhi, September 11: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the look out notice issued against former Union minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti in connection with INX Media case till September 18. The apex court will decide the fate of Karti on next hearing.

Highlights

  • The Apex Court had issued a look out notice for Chidambaram.
  • The notice was issued in connection with INX Media bribery case.
  • Chidambaram is also prohibited from leaving the country.

Karti was also prohibited from leaving the country. The Income Tax Department, after raiding his home and office, had accused him of appropriating money through illegal means.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had alleged Karti illegally took service charges for getting the FIPB clearance during his father P Chidambaram’s tenure as the finance minister. The court had earlier directed Karti to appear before the probe agency.

In August, the Madras High Court had directed Karti to approach the Delhi High Court to quash the FIR filed against him in a bribery case as the case does not come under its jurisdiction.

Karti had moved the Delhi High Court after the top court asked him to appear before the CBI  to help the investigating agency with its probe. Earlier in August, the Madras High Court had stayed the look out circular issued against Karti and four others.

The apex court had later said that it would review the Madras High Court order cancelling the look out circular issued by Foreigner Regional Registration Officer (FRRO).

On May 16, the CBI had raided Karti’s residence, along with 13 other locations in New Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai and Chandigarh. An FIR was registered against Karti, Indrani Mukherjee and Peter Mukerjea, the owner of INX media.
