New Delhi: IRCTC Tatkal sent users into a tizzy on Thursday morning as the website was down. Users took to Twitter to complain about the IRCTC server being down at peak time. (Also read: Now Book Tickets Even After Preparation of Reservation Chart)

The screen displayed site maintenance message which said, “Due to maintenance activity E-Ticketing is not available please try later for cancellation.”

One can book a tatkal train ticket a day before the actual departure of the train. The timing for that window has also been fixed at 10 AM for AC classes (2A, 3A, CC, 3E), and at 11 AM for non-AC classes (SL, FC, 2S).

IRCTC has reduced the advance reservation period (ARP) of tatkal ticket booking from two days to one day excluding the day of journey from the train originating station.

Under the tatkal train reservation quota, only four train tickets can be booked per PNR. For the sleeper class, Indian Railways charges Rs 100 to Rs 200 for booking a train ticket under the tatkal quota. For an AC Chair Car ticket, the charges levied by the Indian Railways are between Rs 125 and Rs 225.
