New Delhi: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has decided to launch four heavy-duty communication satellites by the end of 2019 which will provide high-internet speed. ISRO chairman K Sivan told The Times of India, “The launch of four high-throughput satellites will provide the country broadband connectivity of over 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) by next year. Gsat-19 was already launched in June last year, Gsat-29 will be launched by November and Gsat-11 (Isro’s heaviest satellite weighing over 5.7 tonnes) will be launched from French Guiana by December. The ISRO chief added that with the help of the four satellites, India would receive high-speed internet connectivity, especially in the rural areas and there would be no digital divide in terms of access to the service. The speed and the connectivity of the internet are set to be more efficient as the heavy duty satellites use multiple spot beams. The narrower the satellite signals, the more concentrated in power they are. These powerful shot beams cover only a part of the geographical area. Therefore, these satellites reuse these shot beams multiple times in order to cover the entire country. Traditional satellites, on the other hand, cover a wider portion of the earth by just using a single broad beam which is less powerful and less concentrated. India ranks as the second largest country in the world in terms of its internet user base. The country has around 500 million internet users, while China ranks the first globally. According to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index which was released last November, India ranked the 109th in terms of mobile internet speed and 76th in terms of fixed broadband speed.
