Pudukkottai, Aug. 02: The sub-registrar in Pudukottai district on Wednesday forze 100-acre land of Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar, following the order of the Income Tax (I-T) department. Interestingly, sub-registrar Pudukkottai, Sasikala was immediately transferred to Virudunagar district after freezing the property of C Vijayabaskar and his family. The assets were frozen in Thiru Vengaivasal, the native village of Vijayabaskar.
The properties attached include approximately 100 acres of land and a quarry in Pudukkottai district in Tamil Nadu, a senior Income Tax official told PTI. The process to determine the minister’s tax liability would start soon, he said. “Provisional attachment will be converted into regular attachment upon raising of regular demand and if the assesse pays tax, all attachment will be lifted immediately,” the official said.
On the rationale behind attaching properties of about 100 acres, the official said the extent of attachment will be “commensurate with the likelihood of demand (for tax).” Though the properties have been attached, the assessee continue to ‘use it, enjoy it, rent it out’ and the only bar is that it cannot be sold, he said.
On May 17, the I-T department conducted raids at C Vijayabaskar’s residence in Pudukkottai. The IT department had issued summons to Vijayabaskar’s wife on May 3. Earlier in May, several income tax officials raided Vijayabaskar’s Greenways Road residence and other locations in Pudukkottai and Trichy.
The I-T officials also raided several premises belonging to the minister and his relatives in Chennai and other districts owing to allegations of involvement in cash distribution to voters in R.K. Nagar constituency where a by-election was held on April 12. In his defense, Vijayabaskar said the I-T Department was harassing him despite his full cooperation.
