New Delhi: A team of Income Tax sleuths conducted raids at a private hotel in Karnataka’s Ballari district late Tuesday night, where former MLA and Congress leader Anil Lad was staying. The Income Tax officials also served him a notice to appear before some officials for questioning later.

Anil Lad, a senior Congress leader, was arrested by the CBI, back in 2015 in connection to an illegal iron ore mining scam.

The IT department and the Election Commission have been carrying out raids in Karnataka and other states, for the past one week, just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Last night, TDP MP Galla Jayadev’s properties were raided, following which he staged a dharna outside the collector’s office and demanded the reason for an arbitrary Income Tax strike.

Meanwhile, the IT department has written to the Chief Electoral Officer seeking legal action against Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara and several other Karnataka cabinet members for allegedly intimidating tax officers and obstructing them from discharging duties, sources said. Earlier on Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had also alleged that various leaders, including the Prime Minister, are “acting vindictively” against the state.

On the other hand, in a major crackdown on April 7, the Income Tax Department teams carried out raids at over 50 places in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore and Bhopal, including the residence of Chief Minister Kamal Nath’s Officer on special duty Praveen Kakkar, and in New Delhi and seized a huge amount of cash.

The IT officials raided Kakkar’s office on the sixth floor of Platinum Plaza building and his residence in Nadir Colony in Bhopal. Kakkar’s house and office in Indore were also searched, sources said.
