Jammu, Feb 13: The Kashmir Valley witnessed one of the fiercest encounter on Sunday. A total of 4 terrorists were killed during a 10-hour gunbattle in Frisal village in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Two army personnel including a civilian were also martyred in the encounter. Moreover, three army men sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment. The four militants who were killed in the encounter between security forces and militants have been identified as members of terror groups Lashkare-Taiba (LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. The fierce gunbattle continued for 10-hours as the security forces surrounded the house in Frisal village to flush out the terrorists. The militants opened fire from within the house where they were holed up, making it difficult for Army men to enter. PTI report stated that the security force acted upon a specific technical and human intelligence that assured the presence of militants, and swooped down on their hideout at Nagbal village and engaged them in an encounter. Following a civilian’s death in the encounter, protests erupted in the Kashmir Valley. A total of 18 people were injured and one was killed in clashes between protesters and police. Reports also mentioned that Ashiq Ahmed Rishi, the son of the house owner, was shot dead after he allegedly hurled stones at the soldiers as the encounter raged on. Brigadier R Chakraborty , 1-Sector Commander, Rashtriya Rifles on Sunday afternoon informed that two ou of the four militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen while the rest two belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). According to ANI news agency, three AK -47 rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the terrorists. “At 11.30 pm on Saturday we got the information from the police that four militants are hiding there. After we cordoned off four to five houses at around 12, we came to know that a civilian is also inside and delayed the operation by three to four hours,” Chakraborty added.

The security personnel who were killed in the gun battle are Lance Naik Bandoriya Gopal Singh from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district, and sepoy Raghubeer Singh, 31 from Uttarakhand. The four terrorists who were gunned down by security forces were identified as Mudasir Ahmad Tantra of Redwani, Farooq Ahmad Dar, of Arow in Kulgam, and Younis Qadir Lone of Haoura. The body of the fourth slain terrorist is yet to be identified, the Police informed.

After Burhan Wani’s killing on July 8, Kashmir witnessed four months unrest. Wani was a commander of Hizbul Mujahideen and was popular among the Kashmiris due to his activity on social media. The unrest in the Valley continued with massive protests and mass demonstration in which about a hundred people were killed and more than 12,000 injured.

On February 4, two top Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. On January 24, security forces gunned down two militants in Ganderbal area of central Kashmir. Reports stated that two militants belong to Lashkar-e-Taiba. Two AK-47 rifles were also recovered from the slain militants.
