Srinagar, June 23: The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have imposed Section 144 in some parts of Srinagar after the separatists announced that they would be holding a post prayer protest. The protests will be against the killing of a ‘serial stone pelter’ Tauseef Ahmad Wani who was also known as ‘Chotta Geelani’. “Restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed to maintain law and order in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Safakadal and Maisuma police stations,” a senior police officer said.Also Read - Has 3rd COVID Wave Arrived in India? According to the reports, under the Section 144, there will be no gathering of five or more people in large numbers. The protest has been called by the separatists against the killing of a civilian, Touseef Ahmad Wani in Kakapora in Pulwama district in firing by security forces on Thursday, June 22. He was killed Wani was killed when a mob attacked the Kakapora police post soon after three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed in the area by the security forces. Tauseef Wani had 10 FIRs registered against him. Wani was also booked twice under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Tauseef Wani was first arrested in 2010 where he was allegedly leading a protest against the security forces in Pulwama. He was again involved arrested for his involvement in the protests following Hizbul commander Burhan Wani’s death. Wani was booked under PSA and shifted to Kathua district jail last year. According to the locals, Tauseef Wani used to lead protests in Pulwama and other districts surrounding it. However, the police denied the claims saying that Wani was leading a protest near the Kakapora police chowki on Thursday, when he hit by a shell. “He was leading the stone pelters when and a shell hit him. It is not a case of target killing,’’ said a senior police officer, reported Indian Express.

“He was hit by a shell from close range which led to blood loss,’’ locals said. The locals also said that Wani used to be present at the funeral of every militant or civilian killed in south Kashmir, especially in Pulwama district. “He used to drive an auto rickshaw and occasionally, worked as a JCB driver,” said Mohammad Sahid, his neighbour, reports IE.

A senior police officer, identified as Deputy Superintendent of Police Muhammad Ayub Pandit, was lynched to death by a mob outside the Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area on Thursday night. The officer also fired three shots in self-defence injuring three attackers. But the mob overpowered Atub Pandit and killed him. The reports also have it that the security guards reportedly ran away after finding the mob too large to handle.
