The horribly regressive and sexist practice is still thriving in the country, and the problem is especially worse in rural parts, where women have to go through unspeakable atrocities, if they are unable to pay the huge dowries demanded by their husband’s families. So was also the case with a woman whose husband who got abuses and expletives tattooed all over her hands, because her family was unable to pay him the dowry that he demanded. The case of dowry torture has been reported from the Amer area of the capital city of Rajasthan. The accused had asked his wife’s family to pay him Rs 51,000 in dowry, which they were unable to pay. Following this, the man along with his family, tied her up and tattooed abuses on her hands. They also forcible wrote on her head in Hindi, ‘My father is a thief’. Shocking images of the tattoos show the abuses engraved in the woman’s fore hands. Dowry torture and deaths are a big issue in the country. A 2015 report by the Indian Express had showed that India reported 24,771 dowry deaths in just the last three years. The report quoted government figures, stating that as per National Crime Records Bureau data, the country has recorded 3.48 lakh cases of cruelty by husband or his relative. West Bengal had topped the chart with 61,259 such cases in past three years, followed by Rajasthan (44,311) and Andhra Pradesh (34,835).
