New Delhi: An avalanche has occurred near the police post in Jawahar Tunnel area in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, news agency ANI reported on Thursday. A rescue operation has been launched by the security forces.

The authorities said 60 families from Waltangoo Nar and 18 from Nageenpora Kund were taken to safer places by the police and civil administration as heavy snowfall hit the Valley. Following the snowfall, the provincial administration in the Valley issued an avalanche danger warning in the higher areas.

On February 2, three persons died in an avalanche that occurred near the Gudkhamb point at Aru in Pahalgam area. The incident occurred when a snow-clearance exercise was underway on the Pahalgam-Aru road. The bodies were recovered from the snow after the rescue team cleared the debris. The Tehsildar of Pahalgam Ghulam Sood had said, “The three bodies have been recovered and are lying at the civil hospital, Pahalgam.”

In yet another avalanche disaster on January 3, a soldier was killed and another one sustained injuries after an avalanche hit the Army post along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. The avalanche hit the post of Rashtriya Rifles in Sawjian sector in the morning. It buried two soldiers, following which a rescue operation was launched immediately, the police said.
