New Delhi, August 12: A policeman has been martyred and three security forces personnel were left injured in an encounter that broke out in Batamaloo area of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday morning. “On a specific information about presence of terrorists in a hideout, an operation was launched in Batmaloo Srinagar leading to exchange of fire, one SOG boy martyred, one JKP and 2 CRPF Jawans sustained injuries, operation continues,” Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid wrote on Twitter.

Security forces had launched a cordon and search operation based on specific information about the presence of militants.

Speaking to PTI, a police official said that the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired upon the forces, who retaliated. Meanwhile, Internet services have been suspended in the city as a precautionary measure. The gunfight is still underway. More details awaited.

The encounter comes day after two terrorists were gunned down by security forces in an encounter that broke out in Sopore of Baramullah district in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was launched on reports of the presence of two terrorists in Drusu area. Reports claimed that one of the two terrorists was a BTech student from Pulwama. His family had appealed to him on social media to give up militancy.

Earlier this month, two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terrorists were killed in an encounter in Kupwara district. The exchange of fire between the terrorists and the security forces had started during a Naka checking.
