Srinagar: Five civilians were killed in an explosion that rocked the site of Kulgam encounter on Sunday. 40 others are said to be injured. They have been admitted to Srinagar hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Talib Maqbool of Laroo (Kulgam), Tajamul of Danew (Bogund), Irshad Ahmad of Shurat (Kulgam). In the wake of the incident, Joint Resistance Leaders (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Kashmir Moulvi, Omar Farooq and Yaseen Malik has called a shutdown on October 22. As per reports, the civilians visited the encounter site immediately after operation concluded while turning down the request by police officials to not do so as the search operation was underway. “Civilians visited the encounter site immediately after operation in spite of request not to visit, as a thorough search was underway. After forces withdrew, some explosive substance went off resulting in injuries to civilians,” a J&K police official was quoted as saying by ANI. Meanwhile, the police have requested the locals not to visit the site again.

Earlier in the day, three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists were neutralised by the security forces during encounter in Laroo area of Kulgam district in South Kashmir. Two soldiers were also injured in the exchange of fire. The identities of the militants have not been ascertained as of yet.

A joint operation was launched by the troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), the state police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after receiving information about the presence of militants in Laroo village.

“As the cordon around the hiding militants was tightened, they fired at the security forces triggering the gunfight. Two of the slain militants were Pakistanis while the third was a local,” police sources said.

In an earlier incident, on October 19, the security forces gunned down three terrorists during an encounter in Baramulla’s Boniyar in Jammu and Kashmir. The security forces seized four AK-47 rifles and four Haversacks from the slain militants.

A few days back, two security personnel were injured as terrorists attacked a police party in Baramulla’s Pattan.
