According to sources close to Jammu and Kashmir Police, Adil Ahmad, a protesting civilian, who was injured during the clashes in Behibagh village was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the Kulgam district hospital. Three other civilians, Sajad Ahmad of Dooru in Anantnag district, Zubair Ahmad of Pulwama and Yasir Ahmad of Shopian, also succumbed to their injuries. Earlier, Asif Ahmad of Rohmou village of Pulwama died in a Srinagar hospital due to injuries suffered in the clashes. The clashes that broke out after five terrorists were killed in Shopian gunfight has left over a dozen civilians injured. During the protests, a mob even torched two fire tenders.

Five militants, including Hizbul commander Saddam Paddar, Kashmir University assistant professor Muhammad Rafi Bhat, Tawseef Sheikh, Molvi Bilal and Adil Ahmad, were killed in the Shopian encounter. Two security personnel were also injured in the gunfight.

Reportedly, the slain professor belonged to Chunduna village of Ganderbal district. He went missing around 3.30 pm on Friday. His body has been handed over to his family for burial. The classes in the Kashmir University will remain suspended on Monday and Tuesday on the order of the authorities.

After the professor’s death, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, “Sadly this is also an answer to those who claim jobs and development are the solution to the violence and alienation in Kashmir.

“This is another tragic development in a steady stream of tragedies in Kashmir,” he said.

Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, SP Vaid applauded the security forces for carrying out a successful encounter. “Encounter concluded at Badigam, Zainpora in Shopian, 5 bodies of terrorists recovered,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, mobile Internet services in south Kashmir and in Ganderbal district have been suspended to prevent the spread of rumours.

The encounter between the terrorists and security forces broke out after a cordon and search operation was launched in Badigam village in Zainapora area of the south Kashmir district following specific information about the presence of terrorists in the area.

Earlier on Saturday, three terrorists were killed in an encounter that took place in Chattabal area of Srinagar.Three security personnel were also left injured.
