Jammu and Kashmir rains: Flood alert in valley; Jhelum crosses danger mark

The water level in Jhelum crossed the danger mark at Sangam in south Kashmir early on Thursday morning as most parts of the Valley were lashed by incessant rains since Wednesday.

Srinagar, June 25: Flood alert has been issued in parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The water level in Jhelum and its tributaries rose sharply following heavy rainfall since the south-west monsoon winds struck the valley on Wednesday. Heavy downpour continued in the areas of South Kashmir. Anantgam and Pulwama districts have been worst affected. (READ: Rain likely in Jammu and Kashmir)

The water level in Jhelum crossed the danger mark at Sangam in south Kashmir early on Thursday morning as most parts of the Valley were lashed by incessant rains since Wednesday. The low lying areas in Kashmir’s Pulgam district have been inundated due to the flood waters of the local Vessu river. People from these villages have left for safer places after over a dozen houses suffered damage due to flash floods.

Ensuring swift action by the government, a provincial administration official said, “All staff with flood protection duties have been ordered to report on duty”. The flash-floods has reminded people of Jammu and Kashmir of the devastating flood in September, 2014 which caused major loss of life and property. Fearing another climatic catastrophe, a residents of South Kashmir are quite nervous.
