Srinagar, Jul 11: A security personnel was killed and another was left critically injured in an ongoing encounter between security forces and terrorists in Handwara area of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, heavy exchange of firing is underway in Badi Behak and Sangal areas where terrorists are believed to be holed up. A latest development suggests that more forces have been rushed to the spot.

Earlier in the day, the security forces began a cordon and search operation in the Badi Behak and Sangal areas following information of terrorists hiding there. Meanwhile, more details are awaited.

On Tuesday, two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists, including a Pakistani national, were killed in an encounter while a civilian died and 20 others sustained injuries during clashes with security forces near the scene of gunbattle in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.

As per a police official, a joint patrol of the security forces had launched searches in the Kundallan area of the district in the early hours on Tuesday following credible leads about the presence of terrorists there. As the searches were going on, militants hiding inside the house fired upon the search party, who in their guarded response fired back, leading to an encounter.

“During the encounter, all the hiding terrorists were eliminated successfully by the joint patrol of the security forces. The slain terrorists were identified as Sameer Ahmad Sheikh, a local, and Babar from Pakistan,” he said, adding that the ultras were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit JeM.

On the other hand, a terrorist was killed in the forest area of Kupwara’s Handwara on Monday in an encounter with security forces which started late on Sunday night.  The encounter had begun amid a shutdown called by the separatists to mark the second death anniversary of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani who was killed along with his two associates by the security forces on this day in 2014 in Anantnag’s district’s Kokarnag area.
