Srinagar: Days after Pulwama Terror Attack mastermind was knocked down by security forces, two Jaish-e-Mohammed militants were on Friday killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town.

“The operation against the militants is still going on,” a police source said. Police said one of the militants, whose identity is yet to be established, was killed in Warpora locality.

On a tip-off, the security forces started a cordon and search operation in Warpora. “As the cordon around the hiding militants was tightened, they fired at the security forces triggering an encounter,” a police officer said.

“Two top terrorists of Jaish-e-Mohammed were eliminated. There was no collateral damage & no injuries to security personnel. Identities yet to be ascertained. The public is requested not to venture into the operational area until it is sanitised, “DIG South Kashmir Atul Kumar Goel said.

Clashes broke out between civilians and security forces near the gunfight site as protesters tried to disrupt the operation against the militants.

Security forces used pellet gunshots and tear smoke to quell the protests, injuring some of the protesters.

Authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in Sopore and adjoining areas.

This comes a week after the security forces gunned down two terrorists, including Abdul Rasheed Ghazi alias Kamran – the Jaish-e-Mohammed commander who had masterminded the February 14 attack in Pulwama which left 40 CRPF jawans dead.
