Srinagar, May 3: The indiscriminate stone-pelting on a school bus that left two children injured; one with grievous head injuries on Wednesday, has left the Valley on the edge, say media reports. The Valley is on the edge, parents and schools alike have questioned how children could have been targeted. Political parties have gone all out to condemn the act even as Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called it a cowardly and senseless act in her tweet.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, in a report in The Indian Express, was quoted as saying that the amnesty granted to stone-pelters was being misused by “goons … determined to use the opportunity given them to pelt more stones”. “How does pelting stones on school children or tourist buses help advance the agenda of stone pelters?” he asked.

Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the incident was “disturbing” and that such “hooliganism” would ruin their movement.  Syed Ali Shah Geelani said, “Our strength lies in discipline and we should keep strict vigil over those involved in these incidents… we need to demonstrate mature thinking and follow discipline.”

On Wednesday, a bus carrying students of Rainbow International School was attacked by stone-pelters. The incident occurred in Zawoora village of Shopian. The injured children were taken to the hospital from where one of them was referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment, an official told news agency IANS.

The protesters wanted a bandh in protest against the killing of two militants in Drabgam in Pulwama. Police said a stone hit Rehan Goursi, a class II student, on the head. He was taken to Shopian where the doctors referred him to Srinagar. The boy’s condition was stable.

DGP SP Vaid tweeted: “Miscreants pelted stones on the school bus of Rainbow school Shopian, resulted in injuries to 2nd class student Rehan. He has been shifted to SKIMS for treatment with head injury. Complete madness how stone pelters are targeting young school children. These criminals will face the law.”

Police were on the lookout for the miscreants.
