Notably, Nehru was the first prime minister of India, who held office between August 1947 and May 1964.  He died of heart attack at the age of 75 on this day in 1964. On May 28, Nehru was cremated at the Shantivan on the banks of the Yamuna. His last rites were witnessed by 1.5 million mourners who had flocked into the streets of Delhi and the cremation grounds.
