Bengaluru, Jun 13: Congress candidate Sowmya Reddy won the election in Jayanagar Assembly constituency by 3775 votes against BJP nominee B N Prahlad on Wednesday. After the 16 rounds of counting, Sowmya was ahead with 54,045 votes over Prahlad, who received 50,270 votes.
The Assembly elections were held across Karnataka on May 12, but poll in Jayanagar seat was countermanded following the death of BJP candidate B N Vijayakumar, who was holding the seat. BJP’s B N Prahlad, brother of Vijaykumar, and senior Congress leader and former minister Ramalinga Reddy’s daughter Sowmya Reddy were locked in a direct contest for Jayanagar seat.
The JD(S) had on June 5 pulled out its candidate and extended the party’s support to its ruling coalition partner, the Congress. In Karnataka Assembly elections, the BJP had emerged as the single largest party in the state assembly with 104 seats, while the Congress and JD(S) garnered 78 seats and 37 seats respectively. However, after days of high-political drama in the state, the Congress and the JD(S) came together and managed to form a coalition government in the state.
