Harivansh Narayan Singh, a leader of Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), is likely to be the NDA candidate for the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, news agency PTI quoted sources as saying.

According to reports, Singh’s name comes at the forefront as an attempt by the BJP to soothen its strained ties with the JD(U), reportedly over seat sharing in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The election to the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha will be held at 11 AM on August 9, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu announced today.

Earlier, Naidu had suggested that the deputy chairman should be elected by consensus.

However, it has been reported that the opposition may field Trinamool Congress’ Sukhendu Shekhar Roy as its candidate for the post.

A side needs 123 parliamentarians to push their candidate for the post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman.

BJP, despite being the single largest party with 69 seats, is way behind the majority mark in the 245-member House. On the other hand, the Congress has 50 members and plans to garner support for its candidate.

The post of the Deputy Chairman has been lying vacant since June this year following the retirement of P J Kurien, who was elected to the Upper House of Parliament on a Congress ticket from Kerala.
