Ranchi: A mentally unstable man on Saturday axed five members of his family to death in the wee hours of Saturday, in Jharkhand’s Saraikela-Kharswan district. The man has been arrested.

The accused, identified as Chunu Soren, killed his brother Ravi Soren (45), sister-in-law Kalpana (39), bother-in-law Jitan Soren and two children of the family at Pudusilli village in the district, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Chandil, D N Banka told PTI.

Further, the man also attacked his mother and younger brother but they managed to escape. They received injuries and had to be admitted to a primary hospital, but were declared out of danger. The accused’s wife and children managed to escape unhurt, Banka said.

In an earlier incident which took place last year, two people died and another injured when a 42-year-old man said to be mentally challenged allegedly attacked them in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district. The man named Nallasamy attacked two people sleeping in a temple premises in Anthiyur, with a wooden log, police said. The duo including the watchman of the temple died on the spot, cops said adding the deceased were aged around 50. Later, the accused stabbed another person at a bus terminus, using a knife. However, the villagers caught hold of Nallasamy and handed him over to the police. A murder case was registered against Nallasamy.
