Marandi and his family had been deprived of food for the last few days as the local PDS shop refused to provide subsidised foodgrains as the thumb impression of Marandi’s daughter did not match with the biometric records.

Speaking to The Times of India, his daughter Sanodi informed that nothing has been cooked at their home since a few days as they had no foodgrains. Meanwhile, the officials have rejected the claims made by the family. As per Mohanpur block development officer Ashok Kumar, Marandi’s family had procured subsidised foodgrains from the local PDS shop for September. The Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar Sinha has also set up an inquiry team to ascertain the cause of Marandi’s death.

Earlier on September 28, an 11-year-old girl, Santoshi, had died of ‘hunger’ in Simdega after her family’s ration was cancelled. In another similar incident, a 45-year-old rickshaw puller, Baijnath Ravidas, died of alleged starvation in Jharia region of Dhanbad district of the state. In this case too, the authorities denied ‘starvation’ as the reason behind his death instead blamed prolonged illness.
