Ahmedabad, January 17: Dalit leader and Independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani claimed that there is a threat to his life and said that the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh can kill him. His remarks came after some Dalit groups demanded Y category security for him.
“I also have the same feeling as (VHP leader) Pravin Togadia. The fascist forces are capable of killing anyone. There is a threat to my life as well. The BJP and RSS can kill me, and as per my sources, they definitely want to eliminate me,” Mevani told The Indian Express. The Y category security consists of 11 security personnel, including eight commandos.
Earlier, Dalit groups had submitted memorandums to Collectors in various districts of the state, demanding Y category security for Mevani. A total of 30 memorandums were submitted across the state. They also demanded withdrawal of cases against Mevani and Bhim Army founder Chandrashekhar.
Earlier this month, an FIR was filed against the Vadgam MLA and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid for their alleged provocative speeches during the “Elgar Parishad”, an event organised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima Koregaon in Pune on December 31.
Mevani won from Vadgam seat in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, defeating BJP’s nominee Vijay Chakravarti by 19,696 votes. He contested as an independent candidate with support of the Congress on the seat reserved for a Schedule Caste nominee.
