Mumbai, Jan 16: Dalit leader and MLA Jignesh Mevani and Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel will hold a joint rally in Mumbai on January 26. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury are also expected to attend the rally. Jignesh Mevani, who led protests in Gujarat against Dalit atrocities after four men were stripped and brutally thrashed with iron rods by cow vigilantes in Una in 2015, ran a relentless campaign against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat Assembly elections. He has been at with CM Devendra Fadnavis-led government in Maharashtra since Bhima Koregaon violence during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Bhima Koregaon battle in Pune district earlier in January. Earlier on January 4, Mumbai Police denied permission for a public meeting of Jignesh Mevani, along with JNU students’ leader Umar Khalid citing security reasons. Several students were also detained or forcibly removed from the venue of the event. He later held a Yuva Hunkaar rally in the national capital despite no permission from Delhi Police, where he had accused the BJP government of not paying heed to the real issues – corruption, poverty and unemployment. The developments came in the wake of a series of disturbances in Maharashtra starting with the desecration of a monument in Vadhu Budruk on December 29, followed by the riots in Koregaon-Bhima that left one dead on January 1, the ‘Maharashtra Shutdown’ that killed a boy and left a trail of destruction across the state.
