Srinagar, Feb 23: Three Army jawans of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles were reportedly killed and five were injured after an unspecified number of terrorists attacked a patrolling party in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours on Thursday morning. According to initial reports, one woman was also killed in the cross firing after the terrorists opened fire. The army personnel martyred in the attack have been identified as Sreejit MJ, Vikas Kumar and Ghulam Muhammad Rather, and those injured include Lt Col Mukesh Jha, Major Amardeep Singh, Surendra Kumar, Sumer Singh and Ajay Pal. The police said that the attack happened at 2.30 am on Thursday morning. “Militants ambushed and fired at the army in Chitargam village of Shopian district today morning,” police said here. Also Read - Gunfight Breaks Out Between Security Forces And Terrorists In Pulwama

“The army was returning after carrying out a search operation in Kungoo village when they were ambushed by the militants,” police added. The civilian woman who died in the crossfire has been identified as Jana Began according to reports.

This is the fourth major attack on the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir in the past three weeks.  On February 17, two local policemen were injured in central Kashmir’s Badgam district when militants hurled a grenade at a police patrolling party in Nowgam sector.

On February 14,  four jawans and four terrorists were killed in two separate gun battles in Bandipora and Handwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The first attack reported from Bandipora claimed the lives of 3 jawans and in the encounter one terrorist was killed. However, in the second attack in Handwara district, 3 terrorists were killed in an encounter.
