4:30 PM: Supreme Court has asked the Delhi Police counsel to talk to Delhi police commissioner B S Bassi and ask him to ensure Kanhaiya Kumar’s security.

4:21 PM: Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi claimed that all adequate steps were taken by the police to escort Kanhaiya inside the courtroom. “He was escorted by requisite number of policemen, he was taken care. We had to wade through the crowd, there was lot of jostling,” he said.
4:20 PM: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury reacted to the controversy saying, “All attempts are being made to silence Kanhaiya and to intimidate all who oppose Sangh philosophy. Good governance-RSS mark!!”.

3:55 PM: Home Secretary has instructed the Delhi Police to submit a detailed the report on the law and order breakdown outside Patiala House Court.
New Delhi, Feb 17: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Student Union leader was heckled outside the Patiala House Court by a frenzied mob comprising of lawyers, ABVP activists and BJP workers. Kanhaiya Kumar was produced in the court by Delhi Police who sought extension of his custody.
Supreme Court expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order at the Patiala House Court. Despite Supreme Court issuing guidelines to Delhi Police for the conduct of the cases pertaining to JNU students, the orders were blatantly broken and not observed by the lawyers or the police forces.
The panel sent by Supreme Court comprising of Kapil Sibal, ADN Rao, Dushyant Dave, Hiren Rawat to take stock of situation at Patiala House Court was also heckled by the aggrieved lawyers.
The mob present outside the court were chanting “Hang Kanhaiya. Kill the traitor. Hand over the anti-national.” Delhi Police remained unable to control the mob who broke the security barrier to an extent and succeeded in heckling him.
Supreme Court has issued immediate orders to adjourn the hearings at the Patiala House Court. “SC has said that Kanhaiya Kumar’s hearing must be adjourned, looking at the present situation,” said senior advocate Prashant Bhushan.
