New Delhi, Feb 19: Supreme Court has begun the hearing of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Student Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea. Bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Abhay M Sapre will hear the petition filed by former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee on behalf of Kanhaiya Kumar.
Kanhaiya was arrested by Delhi Police in the past week on charges of sedition. He is accused of participating in the Kashmir secessionist rally in JNU campus where anti-India slogans were raised. Police also claim to have visual evidence against him of delivering an anti-national speech to the frenzied mob. The Patiala House Court had earlier sent Kanhaiya into 14-days of judicial custody. Following the arrest of Kanhaiya, Leftist student groups across the nation, along with JNU Students’ Union and Teachers’ Association have staged various demonstrations across the nation demanding release of Kanhaiya. They have accused the Government of deliberately targeting ideological opponents under the garb of nationalism.
According to fresh reports, the videos circulated on social media ahead of the arrest, showing Kanhaiya being part of anti-national procession was doctored. In another video, Kanhaiya was seen chanting ‘Azadi’. However, the freedom slogans were made in context to capitalism, casteism, communalism, brahminism, fascism, etc. Nothing seditious in the video was obtained.
