New Delhi, Feb 17: Lawyer Vikram Singh Chauhan, who assaulted students and professors of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) claims that JNU students and faculty members were raising pro-Pakistan slogans inside Patiala House Court which forced him and other lawyers to take law in their own hands. Chauhan alleged that the students were attempting to overrun the institution of court in their left-extremist manner.
Showing no regret over his actions, Chauhan said, “You don’t have the video footage of what happened inside. They were saying ‘Kashmir is ours and we will take it away’. ‘Pakistan Zindabad’. When we told them that you’re statements are anti-national, they hit back at us saying we are professors who know better. They were undermining the court and humiliating our motherland. The lawyer maintains that it was only a tit-for-tat reaction as the police did not act on time. “They were raising pro-Pakistan slogans, so it was natural for me to respond by shouting ‘Bharat Mata ki jai! Vande Mataram.’ When they began hitting us, we, the lawyers of Patiala House Court had to show self defence,” he added.
Chauhan was caught on the camera attacking journalists and students of the JNU. Not only the lawyers, but BJP MLA O P Sharma was also seen assaulting Opposition leaders who had assembled to protest.
As of now Delhi police has taken no action. In an urgent hearing called by Supreme Court to hear the plea of journalists who were attacked by the lawyers, the apex court issued guidelines for JNU related hearings. All the accused would be accompanied by five police personnel. Number of journalists covering the hearings would be restricted. The court has also instructed that only those lawyers would be present inside the court who are representing either of the parties in JNU sedition case.
