New Delhi, February 21: The arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar by the Union Home Ministry and Delhi Police has certainly backfired. Not only this, enormous supports are pouring in for the release of Kumar not only from academicians, but now from journalists too. 48 most reputed journalists of the country have already shown their solidarity with the students by writing a collective letter to the President Parnab Mukherjee to save JNU and its ethos. Adding to the list is respected journalist P Sainath, who stood with students and appealed to stick together.

Sainath, in his one hour solidarity speech for Kanhaiya Kumar and others — booked under sedition charges of Section 124 A of IPC for “allegedly” chanting ‘Anti-National’ slogans on February 9 in the campus — said that it is the best time to be a student and fight for the rights that has been bestowed on us by the Constitution of India. He appealed to the students not to loose hope as there they are not alone. Sainath shared some interesting facts that are rarely shared by census or even being debated including suicides, literacy rates of lower caste people and privatization of Anganwadis. Yes, you read it right, he talked about how 4,000 anganwadis have been given by the government to Vedanta group in  Chhattisgarh and more are likely to follow the suit. Expressing his anger over the HRD minister Smriti Irani, he said that she should recognise the fact that India still stands 135th in the United Nation HRD index, while Sri Lanka places 20 places up and Vietnam is 50 places ahead. Taking a jibe at the government on sedition charges, he said, “The government will have as many as commission on a subject until one give them the report they wants.” He concluded his speech with a very strong message by saying, “JNU has always been a place of diversity, multiple voices and it should be. The way everyone of different ideology has risen above themselves to put forward a united front against the nastiest state, do not loose that unity. Keep your differences, but do not let the political fascists to break you down.” As we also don’t want to end your curiosity, we advice you you watch the video and get inspired with some amazing facts.
