New Delhi, Feb 16: Journalists of National Capital Region (NCR) have sought appointment with Home Minister Rajnath Singh to complaint against the assault on media personnel outside Patiala House Court by lawyers and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad activists. The scribes have accused the right-wing activists and lawyers of branding the media as ‘anti-nationalist and Maoist’ supporters and threatened them to leave the court premises where Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar was being presented.
Editors Guild have alleged that the lawyers who were evidently BJP supporters lashed out at the journalists calling them sympathisers of anti-national elements. Not only were they forced to leave the court premises, but physically and verbally assaulted when they refused to. Condemning the incident in the fiercest matter, Broadcast Editors’ Association General Secretary N K Singh said, “This is very dangerous for any country where democracy is being held to ransom by a handful of lumpens. The media personnel were assembled outside Patiala House Court on Monday evening when JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar was presented before the magistrate by Delhi Police to seek extension of his custody. Judge agreed to the plea of Police extending the custody of Kanhaiya by two days.
Apart from the journalists, JNU students were also thrashed by BJP workers, ABVP activists and lawyers outside the court. Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Ameeque Jamai was thrashed by a mob led by BJP MLA O P Sharma outside the court.
