New Delhi, Feb 19: Supreme Court has rejected the bail petition of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar. The apex court observed that it would not be appropriate to intervene in the matter at the current stage. The bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Abhay M Sapre asked Kanhaiya to move to Delhi High Court instead.
The hearing lasted for 1 hour 10 minutes. Kanhaiya was represented by former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee. Throughout the trial, Sorabjee maintained that there was an imminent threat to Kanhaiya as seen in Patiala House Court when he was presented for extension of police custody. However, the apex court maintained that it could not intervene in the matter at the current stage. The bench recommended Soli Sorabjee to approach Delhi High Court with Kanhaiya’s bail plea. It instructed Delhi Police to enhance the security cover of Kanhaiya. The bench also severely condemned the violent incident outside the Patiala House Court on Wednesday.
Kanhaiya’s legal counsel is expected to reach Delhi High Court today to file the bail petition. Delhi police Commissioner B S Bassi had earlier claimed that the prosecution would not oppose the bail.
