New Delhi: As Delhi Police special cell filed chargesheet against him in sedition case, former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar hit out at Narendra Modi-led government and termed the move as ‘politically motivated’. Raising question on its (chargesheet) timing, Kumar said,”The charge sheet is politically motivated. However, we want the charges to be framed and a speedy trial in the case so that the truth comes out. We also want to see the videos that have been placed on record as evidence by the police.” Furthermore, he claimed, “It was a “diversionary ploy by the Modi government to hide its all-round failures”.
“I have not received any summons or information from the court. But if it is true, then we are thankful to the police and (Prime Minister) Modi that finally after three years, when it is time for him and his government to go, the charge sheet has been filed. But what is pertinent is the timing of the charge sheet – just ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. It is evident that there is a political motive behind this. The motive is that the Modi government has been a failure in all aspects, it has not been able to fulfil even a single promise, so it is playing all its cards to divert the attention,” Kumar told reporters.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police special cell filed the chargesheet in the sedition case against Kanhaiya Kumar, Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid. the 1,200-page chargesheet was filed under various Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 124A (sedition), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 465 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine, forged document), 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 149 (unlawful assembly with common object), 147 (rioting), and 120B (criminal conspiracy). The Patiala House Court would consider the chargesheet on Tuesday.
