New Delhi, March 12: The 15-year-old student of class 10 Jhanvi Behal, who had challenged JNU students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar to an open debate, finally got an answer from her would-be opponent. Kumar, who has emerged on India’s political scene as a potential shot in the arm of the Indian Left, on Friday responded to the girl’s challenge, saying that he is a mere student of an Indian University and that he was sure that she is made to debate much bigger people. In a video released on Friday, Kumar said “I was told that a 15-year-old girl wants to debate with me. I asked why does she want to debate with me? I congratulate her and wish that she debates in the upcoming US presidential elections some day. I am small man, studying at a University.” This comes on the day that media reports suggested that Behal had allegedly received threat messages on social media, for challenging Kumar. The President of the Raksha Jyoti Foundation Ashwani Behal in a letter to the Director General of the Punjab Police had also requested for security for Behal. ANI quoted the letter as saying, ”She is a young woman who raised her voice against the person who is booked under various acts under IPC and she is continuously working for social upliftment of our society. This caused danger to her life and many anti social elements are willing to harm her.” Behal had challenged Kumar, as she felt that whatever Kumar had said in his speech against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was false and untrue. She said that Kumar should appreciate Modi for working for the betterment of the country, instead of attacking him.
