After playing a gangster in last year’s ensemble comedy “Welcome Back,” John Abraham stars in his first solo film of 2016 with “Rocky Handsome”—and it comes as no surprise that it is a full-on action movie.
An official remake of the 2010 award-winning Korean action film, “The Man from Nowhere,” this adaptation will reunite Abraham with his “Welcome Back” co-star Shruti Hassan, alongside Nathalia Kaur and child actor Diya Chalwad.
According to the teaser, which launched last month, Abraham plays Kabir Ahlawat, or as he refers to himself: deadly, dangerous or Rocky? Truly, he looks like a lean, mean, killing machine with guns and fiery stunts. He is a man with a vengeance when his only true friend, a 7-year-old girl, gets kidnapped.
The teaser also poses a thriller element to the story because before 2009, there are no records to be found of Ahlawat—which means the film will delve into the mystery of his real identity and whether or not his past catches up with him. This then leads to the kidnapping, and it looks like Ahlawat will stop at nothing to find her. Naturally, we can see that Abraham underwent great amounts of training to prepare for the stunts and to get that chiseled look.
Hassan plays Abraham’s wife and Kaur will play the role of Chalwad’s mother. Nishikant Kamat, who previously worked with Abraham in the 2011 action movie “Force,” will not only direct him in this film but will also play the villain, Kevin, a gang lord from Goa. This is a hat we have never seen him wear, but based on the first look, are super excited to watch. Stylistically, the director seems to be following the footsteps of fellow peers Karan Johar (“Bombay Velvet”), Prakash Jha (“Jai Gangajal”), and Tigmanshu Dhulia (“Gangs of Wasseypur”).

In an interview, Abraham said that the story promises equal action and emotion. “Any amount of action is not enough if it is not backed by great emotion,” Abraham said. “The action is bound to work for the film as it is backed by the emotions. “Rocky Handsome” is an emotional film between this man and this little girl.”
Deciphering the title, Abraham explained that Rocky is his code name in the film and Handsome because that’s what his friend keeps calling him—so it was important for them to add that.
The music of the movie is composed by Sunny and Inder Bawra and the first son, “Rock The Party,” was released yesterday. Featuring the band Bombay Rockers, the song will take you on a trip down memory lane with the hit song updated with modern and groovy tunes.
Nora Fatehi (“Big Boss 9”) dominates the music video with her stunning dance moves. However, it looks like the song is just a front to move forward the story as Abraham and Kamat have a cryptic interaction and exchange a mobile phone. Either way, this song is definitely going to make rounds in clubs and make you dance to its tunes.
“Rocky Handsome’s” teaser seems full of glorious action scenes, a gritty story, and a unique tale of friendship between Abraham and Chalwad’s characters. A full-length trailer will give us more insight into what we can expect from this action-thriller, and if it is anything like the gripping cop drama Kamat delivered with “Force,” consider us hooked. In fact, the two are teaming up for the sequel, “Force 2,” with Abraham reprising his role of ACP Yashvardhan alongside Sonakshi Sinha, unlike the original which starred Genelia D’Souza, and is slated to release later this year.
Our only hope is that the acting in “Rocky Handsome” lives up to the expectations. The film is being produced by Abraham himself under his banner, John Abraham Entertainment, along with Azure Entertainment, and is slated to release on March 25.
