New Delhi: As the four convicts of 2012’s Nirbhaya gangrape case — Mukesh, Pawan, Akshay and Vinay — were hanged on Friday in Delhi, Nirbhaya’s ancestral village of Medwara Kala in UP burst into celebrations.

“March 20 should be celebrated as ‘Nirbhaya Diwas’. It is a new beginning. The convicts were more dangerous than the ‘corona’ and they are no more now,” Nirbhaya’s grandfather Lalji Singh said, as quoted by PTI. The family members never celebrated Holi or Diwali since the incident took place.

“The accused would have been executed earlier had Delhi’s AAP government not favoured a mercy petition. There should be a time-bound decision on women-related crimes,” he said.

This village got associated with the incident since 2012. Every year, a prayer meet used to be held on December 16. Balia district also planned to have a college named after Nirbhaya.
