Lucknow, May 31: In a major setback to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate won politically-crucial Kairana by-election, the counting for which was held on Thursday. RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan, who was backed by the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress and Nishad Party, defeated BJP’s Mriganka Singh. Kairana parliamentary seat fell vacant in February 2018 after the death of BJP leader Hukum Singh, following which the party fielded his daughter Mriganka Singh from this seat. Tabassum Hasan began leading in the vote count right from the postal ballot counting and has since been increasing the margin against Singh. Elated with her initial leads, Hasan said the result of the by-polls cleared the path for the united opposition in 2019. “This is the victory of truth. I still stand by what I said, there has been a conspiracy and we do not want any future elections to be conducted on Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). She also thanked everybody for putting in their best and pointed out how not only her party, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) of Ajit Singh, but workers of the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress and even the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worked hard to consolidate voters in her favour.
“In the holy month of Ramadan, all the people worked hard in this scorching heat for a goal, with full confidence and positivity and the results are gladdening,” she said, sounding elated on what appears to be now a certain victory.
