Kanpur, April 20: The Income Tax Department conducted a raid at the residence of Additional Sales Commissioner Keshav Lal on Wednesday. The I-T team reached Lal’s Lakhanpur residence and conducted the raid and as per sources, he was not at home during the raid. As per reports, this raid has made the Sale tax department uneasy. According  to Newstrack, a Hindi news website, the I-T department was expecting to find discrepancies in taxes through this investigation.

Reports claim that the sleuths are not willing to comment on the incident. As per Newstrack, on April 18, the I-T department also conducted raids at the residence of RTO (Enforcement) Sunita Verma and her Husband DK Verma, an Assistant Commissioner.

The Newstrack report also claims that as per their sources, following the scraping of old 500 rupee notes and 1000 rupee notes, Sunita Verma and additional sales commissioner Keshav Lal exchanged more than 1 crore rupees. Reportedly, such concrete information was provided to the I-T Department by the owner of Shatabdi travels. The report also alleged that buses belonging to Shatabdi travels carry tons of goods evading sales tax from Kanpur to Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttarakhand amongst passengers.

Since the demonetisation move, Government has cracked down many such cases of corruption involving Government officials. If the claims of the report, that both Lal and Verma exchanged an amount as huge as 1 crore, a thorough investigation is indeed required.
