Bengaluru, May 15: The counting of votes of the Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018 will take place today, May 15. The counting of the votes is underway and the final results are expected to be out by late afternoon. The Karnataka Assembly Election 2018 will see the ruling Congress locking horns with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular). The polling in 222 constituencies of Karnataka Assembly was held on May 12.

The total voter turnout was recorded at 72.13 per cent, this year by the Election Commission. As of now the exit polls have been painting a confusing picture. While some have predicted that the Congress will emerge as the winner; some declared that BJP will continue with its winning streak and cement its base in the southern state. Meanwhile, various other exit polls have predicted that Janata Dal (Secular) may prove to be a silent performer. BJP chief ministerial candidate Yeddyurappa said,”With the help of everyone, we are to win 125-130 seats. The Congress will not cross 70 seats and the JD(S) will not cross 24-25… These are my figures. Until now, never have my calculations gone wrong.”

This election is very important for the Congress as Karnataka, (after Punjab) is the only large state that the Congress is aiming to retain while the BJP is striving to form its government in Karnataka. The BJP government was marred after chief minister B S Yeddyurappa was sent to jail on corruption charges and eventually quit the BJP to form his own party. In the elections that followed, the Congress, riding high on BJP anti-incumbency, swept to power winning more than 120 seats. The BJP and JD(S) won 40 seats each. Results of the elections will be declared on today and the fate of the three parties will be sealed.
