Chamarajanagar: At least 11 people have been killed and 80 others have been hospitalised Friday after they consumed ‘prasad’ in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka.

According to Chamarajanagar Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Kumar Meena at least 12 of the 72 people are in a critical condition.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy expressed grief over the incident and said that the Principal Secretary and the commissioner have instructed District Health Officers (DHOs) Mandya and Mysore to provide help to Chamrajnagar health administration.

Kumaraswamy said, “There is an unfortunate food poisoning incident in Kamgere village. Principal Secretary and Commissioner have instructed DHOs Mandya and Mysore to provide help to Chamrajnagar health administration.”

He further added that the concerned program officer is monitoring calls at 108 call centre and coordinating services of ambulances. The Karnataka CM also added that commissioner has instructed ADC Mysore to provide services of private ALP ambulances. Two senior officers are on way from state headquarters to coordinate and supervise activities.

The temple where the prasad was being served comes under Kitchalavadi temple trust. During the event, the devotees were served rice bath as prasadam, following which they fell sick. Reportedly, people started feeling nauseous and vomited after an hour of eating the prasadam. About 60 crows were also found dead around the area.

As per reports, two people have been detained by the police on suspicion of adding poison to the food.
