New Delhi, May 19: Moments after BS Yeddyurappa resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka ahead of the floor test to prove majority, Congress President Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that his “corruption-free India is a blatant lie”. Speaking at the press conference, Rahul Gandhi said, “You’ve seen openly how the PM directly authorized purchasing of MLAs in Karnataka, so the idea that PM spreads in the country that he is fighting corruption, is a blatant lie, he is corruption.”

Congress President began with attacking the BJP legislators for leaving the Assembly before the National Anthem soon after Yeddyurappa resigned as Karnataka chief minister. “Did you notice that after the entire exercise in Karnataka Vidhan Sabha, the BJP legislators & speaker chose to leave the house before the national anthem? It shows they can disrespect any institution if in power, both BJP & RSS have disrespected institutions,” he said. “In India, the will of the people cannot be disrespected. The will of the people is everything,” he said.

“BJP’s plan to derail the democracy has failed. The BJP disrespects everything. I am very proud that the Congress and JD(S) together defeated the BJP and will continue to do so,” he said. Attacking BJP President Amit Shah, Gandhi said, “The people have shown the murder accused that the institution is bigger than him and the party.” Gandhi was joined by party leader Randeep Surjewala and others. On the majority, he said, “If BJP had the full majority, we would have let them make the government. But the reality is that the people of Karnataka do not support them. We had the numbers. Whenever we will see that the institutions of the nation are being attacked, Congress will stand against it.”

On being asked if he has a message to PM Modi, the Congress Prez said, “My only message to the PM is that he isn’t bigger than India, the people, SC, the members of parliament. He needs to understand that the people chose him not just to lead the country but to respect the country. But I doubt he will understand that.”

Reacting to the “PM is corruption remark”, BJP leader Ananth Kumar slammed Rahul Gandhi and said, “What is he saying about PM Modi? This is the PM who has provided a scam less govt. If he puts such an allegation, the people will say he has lost his mind.”

BS Yeddyurappa, who was sworn in as the Chief Minister of state, on Saturday resigned from the post ahead of the crucial Karnataka floor test to prove the majority. In an unusually emotional speech, Yeddyurappa said that he failed to muster the numbers. Before announcing his resignation, the BJP leader said, “I will lose nothing if I lose power, my life is for the people.” Yeddyurappa will submit his resignation letter to Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala.
