In the previous assembly elections, Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Sardar Sarwan Singh Phillaur won the seat by Congress candidate Chaudhary Jagjit Singh. He won the seat by a margin of 823 votes. However, the Akali Dal has decided to field another candidate from the seat. It has given ticket to Congress is contesting assembly elections under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh who has declared these elections to be his last elections.
