Chennai, Aug 1: DMK Chief M Karunanidhi is in a stable condition but his stay at Kauvery Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for age-related illness, will be extended by a few more days, a statement released by the health facility said on Tuesday. “There has been a resolution of the condition which led to his hospital admission, an extended period of hospitalization will be necessary due to age-related overall decline in Karunanidhi’s general health, altered liver functions and haematological parameters. He continues to maintain his vital signs with active medical support,” Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital, Dr Aravindaran Selvaraj said in a statement. Earlier on Tuesday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited him and described his condition as stable. “I met him, he is fine, stable. I am quite happy to see that he is doing well. He is a very tough person like the people of Tamil Nadu. He has the spirit of Tamil Nadu in him,” he told reporters after visiting Karunanidhi. Gandhi was accompanied by Tamil Nadu Congress chief Su Thirunavukkarasar and party leader Mukul Wasnik. State Health Minister C Vijayabaskar also visited Kalaignar earlier in the day and said that he is “stable and breathing on his own”.
Actor-politician Rajinikanth also paid a visit to the Kauvery Hospital to inquire about the health of ailing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi, on Tuesday night. “I came to inquire about the country’s most senior leader. He was sleeping. I inquired about his health from his family members. I pray to the almighty for his speedy recovery,” he told media.
Meanwhile, heavy crowds continued to remain in place outside the Kauvery Hospital, praying for the good health and speedy recovery of their leader. Hundreds of police personnel have been deployed to control the gathered supporters.
Karunanidhi’s son and heir, MK Stalin, said on Monday night that the DMK chief’s condition was stable, assuring supporters who have gathered outside the hospital. Many senior leaders, including Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, representatives of Sri Lankan President, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam along with Chief Minister E Palaniswami, have visited Karunanidhi in the hospital.
The former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) on July 28 after his blood pressure dropped. On Sunday, his pulse rate dropped suddenly however, his vital signs normalised soon with the help of active medical support. “There was a transient setback in the clinical condition of Karunanidhi, DMK President and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. With active medical support, his vital signs are normalising. He continues to be closely monitored and treated by the panel of expert doctors,” the Kauvery Hospital had said in a late night health bulletin.
The DMK chief, who is on intravenous antibiotics, was earlier undergoing treatment at his Gopalapuram residence in Chennai.
