New Delhi, June 30: In the wake of the incessant rains in Kashmir and an increase in the water level of Jhelum river above the critical 21 feet mark in Anantnag district hence, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, on Friday, issued a flood advisory. All the schools in the valley will remain shut today as the Met department has predicted more rain on Saturday, June 30. The first term exams of class 6th, 7th and 8th have also been postponed due to Kashmir flood alert. An official said that the decision to shut all the schools on Saturday has been taken as a “precautionary measure” in view of the flood threat announced by the Irrigation and Flood Department, Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have suspended the Amarnath Yatra while announcing all the pilgrims were safe. No pilgrim is allowed to move towards the cave shrine from either the Baltal base camp in north Kashmir or Pahalgam base camp in south Kashmir. Authorities said all Yatris are safely lodged inside the two base camps. Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, M.M. Shahnawaz, in a statement, said, “At 6 p.m. today (Friday), Jhelum River had crossed the flood declaration level of 21 feet at Sangam in Anantnag district. People living in low-lying areas of south Kashmir, especially along the embankments of River Jhelum and other streams are advised to remain vigilant.” On Friday, Srinagar recorded 12.6 mm rainfall till 8.30 AM.
