New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah reacted sharply on Friday to Deepika Singh Rajawat’s remark over Kathua victim’s parents ‘genes’. Taking it to micro-blogging site Twitter, Abdullah said, “You had me on your side until you slipped in the snide remark about the genes.”
His reaction came after Rajawat wrote on Twitter, “I was there with them when no one was. Now since the rainy days have passed, they are winding up with me just because I could not regularly attend the trial which is taken care of by senior criminal lawyers. I don’t blame them. It is the human tendency which travels in genes.”
It is to be noted here that Deepika Singh Rajawat, the Jammu-based lawyer, had hit headlines as the advocate standing up for the Kathua rape and murder victim. But recently she has been removed from the job by the victim’s father.
The complainant’s father had moved an application in court seeking Rajawat’s removal and the court agreed. Rajawat had moved Supreme Court to get the case shifted from Kathua to Pathankot. In his application, counsel Mubeen Farooqi, representing the victim’s father, claimed that since the two Special Public Prosecutors were doing an ‘effective jobs’ they seek the removal of power of attorney of Deepika Singh Rajawat.
On October 5, the Supreme Court had dismissed the petition filed by accused seeking CBI investigation in the case. Earlier, a local court in Kathua had denied bail to the juvenile accused, observing that the crime was not juvenile in nature. The juvenile was among the eight people arrested for kidnapping, gangraping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in Kathua in January 2018.
The other accused arrested in the case include local resident Sanji Ram, his son Vishal Sharma and two special police officers. In January, the eight-year-old girl was abducted, sedated, gangraped and then murdered in Kathua. Her body was recovered from a forest on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses in the forest area.
The charge sheet had revealed gory details about the crime and this has led to a public outcry in various parts of the country.
