Amar Arshi’s “Kala Chashma” was imprinted in my mind the very first time I heard it while preparing mixes for my sister’s wedding in 2006. Back then, I did not bother watching the original video or learning about the Punjabi singer’s career. Now, more than a decade later, a more hip version of the song has taken over, thanks to the upcoming Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra starrer, “Baar Baar Dekho.”
Directed by Bollywood newcomer Nitya Mehra, “Baar Baar Dekho” tells the story of a romance that spans 30 years. Arshi’s vocals for “Kala Chashma” are now set against an upgraded background score and accompanied by rapper Badshah and singer Neha Kakkar. But the best thing about this newly released song and its video is the ironic hilarity of the contrast to the original video against the glam squad of Kaif, Malhotra, and gang.
Released on July 27, the “Kala Chashma” video has already scored over 16 million views on YouTube and is topping music charts everywhere. Choreographed by veteran Bosco Martis, the dance puts a modern spin on some traditional bhangra moves, and Kaif and Malhotra match each other step-for-step.
This duo looks great together in the video, and if this is a preview to their onscreen chemistry, then we may have a new favorite silver screen Bollywood couple when “Baar Baar Dekho” releases on September 9. If you are not one of the 16 million people who has already seen this video, then what are you waiting for?
